John’s father was William Nassau Kennedy, friend of Garnet Wolseley. William was an officer during the Red River Expedition and paymaster of the Canadian contingent during the Nile Expedition.

1915 obituary from the Institution of Electrical Engineers:

“JOHN NASSAU CHAMBERS KENNEDY, Major R.E., was born in Canada in 1864 and received his first commission in the Army in 1886. Throughout the South African War he served on the Staff in connection with telegraph and wireless telegraph work, and was mentioned in despatches.

After the war he returned to this country and was appointed assistant instructor at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham.

He retired from the Royal Engineers in 1910 and took charge of the electric signalling work of the London and North-Western Railway Company.

At the outbreak of war in August 1914 he was called up from the Reserve and undertook the work of organizing the telephone systems of the new camps.

A few months later he had to go into hospital and he died at Rugby in April 1915.

He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1899.
