The medal was awarded on the grounds of merit by the Government of Canada starting in 1869, with the last issue in 1937. One gold, fifty silver, and five hundred bronze medals were struck. Among those individuals presented the medal in bronze stand the Fathers of Confederation. The silver was distributed more reservedly, and the gold medal was given to Queen Victoria herself.

The design of the Confederation medal is proclaimed by the Canadian numismatist R.W. McLachlan (1886) as “the finest piece of art appearing on any Canadian medal.” The obverse has a unique and ornate effigy of Queen Victoria, with the reverse depicting four allegorical figures representing the four founding provinces of Canada and Britannia seated to the side holding a scroll bearing the text “CONFEDERATION.”

Sir John A.
